Dr. William Winkenwerder has been an advisor to EQT since 2021.
Dr. Winkenwerder is a recognized leader in American healthcare. Trained as a physician and board certified in internal medicine, his experience includes serving as a large healthcare company CEO, senior business executive, government policy maker, and as an investor and
senior corporate advisor.
From 2001 until 2007, he served the United States as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs at the US Department of Defense. There he was the leader of the $40B Military Health System and the principal medical advisor to the Secretary of Defense.
From 2012 until 2014, he was the CEO of Highmark Health, one of the largest U.S. health insurers and integrated health systems. He was a Director at Athena health from 2009-2013.
Earlier in his business career he was a senior executive with Kaiser Permanente and Emory Healthcare.
Dr. Winkenwerder is currently the Chairman at CitiusTech, a global leader in healthcare technology services and software, where he has served since 2015. He is the Lead Director at Confluent Health, a nation-wide physical therapy company, and he is a Director at Sagility Health, a global business process outsource company serving the healthcare industry. He also serves currently as a Director (and Executive Committee Member) at UNC Health, and as a Director at WPS Health Solutions.
Dr. Winkenwerder is also an advisor and investor in several early-stage tech-based companies in the healthcare industry. He also previously served as a Director at Net Health, Athletico, Logistics Health and Capgemini Government Solutions.
Dr. Winkenwerder has served several private charitable organizations including as Chairman of C-Change, a cancer charity founded by former U.S. President George H.W. Bush. He has been an advisor to several candidates for U.S. President.
Dr. Winkenwerder earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Davidson College and a Medical Degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he was the Student Body President. He earned an MBA degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed a Kaiser Foundation Fellowship in epidemiology and biostatistics.
