Mark's career started as a Geologist in the quarrying and concrete industry, rapidly moving to focus on waste and resource management. By 2001 he was running the largest division of Shanks PLC, now Renewi PLC; a significant European resource management company.
In 2007 Mark joined the management board of Viridor Ltd and 3 years later was appointed to the main board of Viridor as COO. On the Board, Mark was responsible for all of Viridor's operations, including health, safety and environmental performance, road/rail/shipping logistics, recycling, secondary material commodity trading, business development and capital expenditure. On departing, Viridor had grown to be the UK's second largest waste business, the UK’s largest non-metal recycling business and the largest UK Energy from Waste operator, with a €1billion
turnover.
In 2015, Mark was appointed CEO of Greenstar, and delivered the turnaround and sale of Ireland's largest waste and recycling business for then owners, Cerberus. This also involved the demerger from Greenstar of Ireland's largest green energy
provider and subsequent sale.
Between 2017 and 2024 Mark was CEO of the UK's largest electrical goods recycler
and from 2020, the largest UK textile reuse and recycling business. Both of these businesses had significant European and global trading footprints. Mark is a well-known and respected leader in the waste resources and infrastructure sector and has been an Advisor to EQT since 2020, Encyclis NED from 2022 and Chair of Encyclis since November 2023.
Mark holds a Degree in Earth Sciences and a Masters Degree in Geomaterial Engineering from the University of London. Mark also holds professional qualifications in International Management, Quarrying, Health and Safety, and Waste and Resource Management.
