Making keyhole liver cancer surgery the first hand choice over open surgery

Every year, more than 3.2 million people worldwide are diagnosed with liver cancer. Surgery is the most effective treatment, normally by removing the tumor with an open surgery. Although keyhole surgery has clinical benefits for the patient with faster recovery time with less pain, it comes with limited visualization for the surgeon, making the navigation aspect challenging. Can AR technology help us change this?

What is the Solution?

Navari has developed an AR software solution providing the surgeons with intraoperative guidance during minimally invasive procedures, leading to increased visualization and more accurate precision when removing the tumor, as well as a safer procedure for the patient. Navari´s technology strongly improves the navigation and the visualization for the surgeon by presenting an AR projection of the cancer tumor and its exact position inside the liver. The projection is live-streamed during the whole surgery procedure and is shown as an integrated part of the video feed from the laparoscopic camera, meaning that no AR-glasses need to be used. The technology works as a plug and play solution and is easily connected to the already existing surgery equipment, such as to the laparoscopic camera equipment, directly in the operating room. This means that no substantial extra equipment needs to be installed in the operating room to utilize the technology.

Keyhole surgery enables shorter recovery time and fewer days in hospital stay. Performing a surgery through small incisions rather than through a large open wound means less tissue damage, smaller scar tissue and improved cosmetic outcomes. Reduced tissue damage leads to less postoperative complications such as lower risk of infection, decreased pain and fewer wound complications. Compared to open surgery, the days in hospital stay for a patient can be decreased with up to eight days.

What EQT Foundation loves about Navari

Accelerating the development and use of digital health technologies to improve treatment of patients while cutting healthcare spending is something EQT Foundation finds both urgent and long needed. The advantages of Navari’s technique over traditional open surgery include a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery time, benefitting both patients and society at large. Medical experts estimate that Navari's technology can reduce the surgery time by up to 30 minutes, thanks to the enhanced visualization, which should be of great interest for those keen on cutting cancer surgery waiting times. Navari’s innovative software solution creates value for both patients, surgeons and health systems worldwide.
