Holy Grail
Nuno Pereira is the CEO of Holy Grail. Following his work as a designer, he has a long track record of founding and leading start-ups within the energy and transportation industries. He holds a degree in Product Design from the Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Portugal.
What is the Challenge?
Since the industrial revolution, humanity has added ~2.4 trillion tonnes of net CO2 to the atmosphere. Enough to tinker with the fundamental balance of Earth’s climate systems in dangerous ways.
Direct Carbon Capture technology is expensive and can only operate in high pressure an temperature environments, making it virtually impossible to operate anywhere but where financed with large amounts of money.
What is the Solution?
Holy Grail has developed a direct air capture technology that runs on electricity at ambient temperature and pressure. Using electrons to capture carbon, the firm has developed a modular, stackable cell made up from low-cost materials and common technical processes. It can capture CO2 directly from the air.
Holy Grail has the potential to deliver on the promise of low cost and scalable carbon removal and lay the foundation for an industry that rivals the size of the fossil fuel sector today. By taking a modular approach, Holy Grail enables faster manufacturing and, in turn, deployment at scale becomes as easy as stacking modules.
What EQT Foundation loves about Holy Grail
We from EQT Foundation want to show you the Holy Grail we believe everybody should drink from.
Using electrons is a novel way of capturing carbon, building on processes that have been well known to scientists for a long time. We are impressed by how Holy Grail has connected the dots and delivered a result with groundbreaking potential to free the world from carbon.
Holy Grail has managed to develop a revolutionary product that has the potential to turn carbon capture devices from large industrial practice into an everyday's product. Not only does this enable large scale efficient removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, it also democratizes who can take part in it.
Imagine a future in which direct carbon removal cells stack like server racks with which you can build massive removal farms. Or simply one in which we can all plug in a carbon removal sell at home or in the office.
