EQT Foundation announces EUR 100,000 grant to Barncancerfonden to support the development of BrainChild

EQT Foundation is pleased to announce its grant to Barncancerfonden to support the development of BrainChild - a master data platform aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer. The grant totaling EUR 100,000 will be used to support the initial work-streams required to develop the platform and is part of EQT Foundation’s grant objective to help non-profit organizations drive impact at scale with the help of technical support from EQT employees. The project was initiated by employees in EQT Digital and is funded by EQT AB’s budget for supporting local communities.

Barncancerfonden was established in 1982 in Sweden to help finance childhood cancer research. Since its inception, the organization has donated more than EUR 340 million to childhood cancer research, making Barncancerfonden the largest childhood cancer research financer.

Annually, more than 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer, and in developed economies, cancer is one of the most common causes of death among children. While the survival rate of patients has increased in the last 40 years, progress has stagnated in the last decades and many of the survivors experience moderate to severe side effects negatively impacting quality of life. While there exist copious amounts of data on childhood cancer, the data is today unstructured and siloed across organizations, institutions and countries making it difficult to access and leverage the knowledge. With the BrainChild data platform, the vision is to improve cancer diagnosis and optimize treatment plans to minimize side effects and risk of relapse through enabling global collaboration and use of artificial intelligence to help uncover new insights and patterns.

The EQT Foundation Deal Team, consisting of Sven Törnkvist, Marcos Alvarez and Celine Bale, will support Barncancerfonden with the development, launch and scaling of the BrainChild data platform through leveraging the expertise, competencies, and network within the EQT ecosystem. Specifically, the team will help with assessing the technical requirements of the data platform and advise on the business model and go-to-market strategy, as well as help identify new collaborators and partners to scale the data platform globally.

"We are grateful for EQT Foundation’s support in developing BrainChild. A breakthrough is needed within childhood cancer research, and we believe BrainChild is the next step that can move us closer to a world where no one longer fears childhood cancer."
Elinor Westerberg. Head of Strategic Business at Barncancerfonden

"BrainChild is fully aligned with EQT Foundation’s purpose of supporting high impact initiatives enabled by disruptive technological innovations. We believe BrainChild will help accelerate childhood cancer research and treatment, and we are confident that Barncancerfonden is ideal steward of BrainChild given their strong international research connections and long history of building cancer research infrastructure."
Sven Törnkvist. Head of EQT Digital and EQT Foundation Deal Team member
